Helga Ruppe, B.A., M.A., Author, Historian, Linguist, Bookkeeper, Artist

About Me Helga Ruppe is a freelance writer of fiction and non-fiction, mostly about local and medieval history.

She has published pieces in Deutsche Presse, a German language newspaper, and Home Rules, the newsletter of the Ontario Federation of Teaching Parents. Her writing experience includes bilingual newsletters for the German-Canadian Club of London and Ruppe Travel Bureau, and the newsletter of the London chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism. She has also done many translations between German and English for private and corporate clients.

Recently, her entry "Mathilda's Choice" placed fifth in the historical fiction contest by Children's Writer.

Helgaís interests are wide-ranging. She belongs to the Society for Creative Anachronism, a group devoted to the study of and teaching about the Middle Ages. She is also an avid student of botany. Helga loves languages and is fluent in German and English, while she reads French, Spanish, Latin, Ancient Greek, Old and Middle English and Old Norse. She is working on a translation of Crescentius On Agriculture from Latin, as well as a translation and redaction of the German medieval cookbook Kuchenmeysterey.

Helga took a bachelorís degree in German at the University of Western Ontario and went on to earn a Masterís degree in medieval studies at the University of Toronto. She is a member of the Medieval Academy of America. Helga is also a graduate of the Institute of Childrenís Literature. She has a Professional Certificate in Creative Writing from the University of Western Ontario.

Helga has travelled as far as Tahiti and Iceland, though her trips most frequently took her to Germany. For many years she worked at Ruppe Travel Bureau in jobs ranging from bookkeeper to tour guide.

She home schools four children and writes stories for them, as well as creating and adapting curriculum material for Kindergarten to grade 9 reading level.

Helga was born and raised in London, Ontario, where she lives with her husband, four children and two cats.
